What is Namaste (Naa·muh·stay) you ask? While being frequently used in yoga, few people fully understand what or why we say "Namaste." This is due in part to the word's lack of a single translation. The word "Namaste" can be understood in a wide variety of ways. The word "namaste," which has Hindu origins, is a proverbial expression that stretches all the way back to the Vedic era. Although Namaste has many diverse interpretations and purposes, its primary function is a show of respect.

It has been in use for literally thousands of years. Although the term "Namaste" has its roots in the East, it has steadily gained favor in the West as a result of the growth of yoga and other spiritual activities. Namaste is usually spoken with a slight bow and hands pressed together, palms touching and fingers pointing upwards, and thumbs close to the chest. This gesture is called añjali mudrā; the standing posture incorporating it is pranamasana.
